Conservation Work

Conservation work takes time and is very expensive, but we are dedicated to leaving our property better for wildlife than when we bought it. For panoramic photos of the overall project, click here. We began to see the results of our work in early 2007. We cleared about eight acres of brush from the old apple orchard and behind the house. This land has been converted to “natural stage” pasture – great habitat for ground nesters such as grouse, and good forage for deer, moose, and the like. We have planted wildflowers with high food value for the birds, and buckwheat and pumpkins for the deer.

Sound forest stewardship requires periodic logging. Although it doesn't seem to make sense at first, properly executed logging benefits wildlife. People also benefit as we can convert the "skid roads" for recreational trails. To see pictures of our logging operation and trail conversion, click here. The photos below show some of the conservation work as it is being done.
