Conservation WorkConservation work takes time and is very expensive, but we are dedicated to leaving our property better for wildlife than when we bought it. For panoramic photos of the overall project, click here. We began to see the results of our work in early 2007. We cleared about eight acres of brush from the old apple orchard and behind the house. This land has been converted to “natural stage” pasture – great habitat for ground nesters such as grouse, and good forage for deer, moose, and the like. We have planted perennial wildflowers with high food value for the birds, deer, and other wildlife. Our conservation efforts have been recognized by county and state officials, and our peers. In May 2010, we proudly hosted a gathering of folks interested in seeing our conservation efforts.Sound forest stewardship requires periodic logging. Although it doesn't seem to make sense at first, properly executed logging benefits wildlife. Many animals use logging "skid roads" to get around - including bats! People also benefit as skid roads can be converted to recreational hiking trails. To see pictures of our logging operation and trail conversion, click here. The photos below show some of the conservation work as it is being done. |
